That NE conference would have included Maryland
So if Maryland had bitten, that might have opened a spot for us in the ACC. Back then the ACC still considered itself a Southern conference, so they would have considered another Southern school.
I think Paterno’s original plan was for the following 8 schools: PSU, Pitt, Temple, Maryland, WVU, Rutgers, Syracuse, and BC. Had that come to fruition, maybe Dave Gavitt and those NE Catholic schools get their wish of a basketball-only conference three decades earlier. A hypothetical 8-team conference, covering the same footprint as the BE, might have been: Georgetown, Villanova, Duquesne, St Bonaventure, St John’s, Seton Hall, Providence, and Holy Cross.
