Point of order: by definition they wouldn't be lesser deserving.

They might be less talented or less likely to win the tournament. But they could not conceivably be called less deserving if they qualified through the pre-determined process.

Further, with a 16-team field including 6 at-large teams, any truly legit contender who botched their conference title team would surely get one of the 6 at-large bids anyway. (This is, admittedly, not a great argument in favor of my proposal, but it at least addresses your concern about a great team getting passed over for blowing their conf title game.)
