Should there ever be criminal charges for actions in a sanctioned sports

contest? IE, HS, College or pro competition. I assume that some actions in any pickup game could be criminal.

Specifically, something like what I saw on the news this morning, and is posted on the Sub Board. A basketball player who was late to cover a 3 point shooter looks at the ref as he's heading to the shooter, sees the ref not looking, then elbows the guy right in the face.

Or in a HS hockey game, during a stoppage in play, I saw 2 guys skating slowly next to one another when one punches the butt end of his stick into the throat of the other. The guy dropped like a ton of bricks. That could have collapsed his larynx, possibly killed him. It didn't but could have.

So, criminal charges for things that ARE clearly assault and battery in any other situation? Or just the risk of playing the game, and the player who did it gets suspended and that's the end of it?
