She didn't have any money? No credit cards? really? He had a twenty dollar bill which he gave away instead of having something to eat in a little while? I think I would believe it better if it was $5.39 in change.

But yeah, on the other hand there's no indication they knew each other beforehand. I would say, however, no one has investigated that or done that follow up. I wouldn't be surprised if he wasn't really an ex-Marine, just that nobody's checked.
