I've always wondered how time in the sun adds up to sunburn or not?

For example, I'm fair skinned and burn pretty easily. If I'm in direct sun for an hour, yeah, I'll have a burn.

But if I'm in the sun for 15 minutes 5 or 6 or more different times that day, does that add up to a burn, or does the time out of the sun reset the burn clock?
