Pet Peeve of mine and here's my deal....JMHO

For years we were told that Melanin is a pigment that increases with UV exposure and PROTECTS the skin from the UV rays. Then all of a sudden Dermatologists were saying "Oh, its terrible, you'll get skin cancer".
I bought a textbook on Dermatology when I was having some skin problems (auto-immune)and EVERY skin condition the "cure" was use of hydrocortisone. Why even have dermatologists. Then this whole industry popped up to remove moles, suspicious freckles, etc. Truth is a freckle is a "melanoma" and there is a big, huge difference between a "malignant Melanoma" and freckle melanoma. If one looks at this under a microscope many have some cell changes that "could" be classified as "precancerous" although that is quite a nebulous and subjective thing. So this whole industry has popped up with Dermatologists doing "skin mapping" and looking for changes and every year or so recommending surgical removal of a suspicious looking freckle and scaring people to death telling they have a "melanoma" knowing that people equate that to cancer....which it is NOT. My darling first ex=wife had things removed every year or so and the path report always said "some cells with possible precancerous changes". Now there are sunscreens, cosmetics and a whole industry based around that. I think its a crock!
This article makes perfect sense to me and has a lot of common sense things. Sometimes you have to weigh one risk against another and nothing is as simple as it can be made to sound. Yep, some of those positives could be attributed to a more active outdoor lifestyle.....fresh air.....better eating habits. Who knows???
My creed is all things in moderation and I don't go lounge in the sun like many but I also don't slather up with sunscreen every time I go out.
Rant over....have a great day!
