A site I like to check occasionally is the BLS's wage survey. It's not perfect, but it gives you an idea of what salaries should be.

In the 757, it says a computer programmer should be making $78K. (Note that this is essentially a junior coding monkey - there are other kinds of "programmers" listed at higher salaries.) In SFO, it says $107K (with applications software developers at a whopping $141K). In New York City, it says $95K. (Note that the list isn't perfect - in Roanoke it has programmers making $101K and applications developers making $88K, which says that probably there are people miscategorizing jobs.)

So sure, you can live in the big city and make a lot more, but it's going to cost you three times as much to live up there as it is in the 757, so I'd choose the 757.
