Poland is 98%..... Polish. That's a bit different than it once was.

Poland has had a long history of being pushed around (border-wise and otherwise) all over Eastern Europe. Many areas that once were Polish were taken by the Soviets and are presently in Belarus or Ukraine. Many areas now in Poland were once in Germany, or earlier they were in Prussia (Wroclaw=Breslau; Gdansk=Danzig). Germans, Russians, Austrians, and Poles all were mixed up together there for hundreds of years. This irritated the Poles greatly, since they became an organized nation in the 10th century and saw all these peeps as being on their land.

So once Europe's national borders got reset after WW2, the Soviets shipped all the Germans, Russians, and Ukrainians OUT of the newly-bordered Polish territory and shipped all the Poles back IN. For the first time in like five centuries, Poland became... completely Polish. The Iron Curtain lock-down kept it that way for years and years, and generations of Poles got used to it.

So the Poles tend to not like outside intrusions, unless there's something in it for them. Americans, Brits, and most EU tourists (except Germans) with $$$ in their pockets would be warmly welcomed. An American wanting to relocate in Poland might get a jovial slap on the back. Refugees, um nope. Germans and Russkies, well... they'd just get the stink-eye, even if they did have a valid passport.
