WVU is kind of a special case regarding academics.

It's not a bad school academically. The West Virginia legislature require WVU to limit its selectivity of instate applicants. WVU has a high acceptance rate of 72%, but WVU has a low graduation rate of 65% after 6 years. They have to take many students that they know won't make it to graduation by law. It's understandable. There has to be somewhere that the kids in West Virginia can go to college. It's a poor state overall. It would be better for WVU's academic standing if that option was Marshall.

By comparison UVA has an acceptance rate of 27% and a graduation rate of 94% after 6 years and 87% after 4 years. The two schools have very different missions. UVA's mission is to admit the better students and graduate them.

But even with this, I think WVU could help the ACC quite a bit with regional rivalries and the West Virginia transplants in Virginia, Pennsylvania, and the Carolinas buying tickets. WVU has a big fan following. That's worth something.
