At least in DC area a lot of older 40-50s suburbs in MD....

so a lot more tight winding roads. Back when I was growing up in the 60s and 70s a lot more countryside in Nova which now have been turned into large planned communties, ie, Ashburn w/large central avenues type stuff.

Anyway, that's my theory.

PS the section of the beltway, "the beltway roller coaster" was due to political nimby influence, so that's certainly an odd section.
