So help me figure out what this window company is doing.
We're looking at new windows for our house. We're looking closest at 2 companies, both of which manufacture and install their own windows. One of them visited us to measure and present Saturday morning.
This company is A+ certified by the Better Business Bureau. Good reviews on all the contractor sites. We were in the showroom a week prior and we DO believe that the product is high quality. The guarantee / warranty is probably the strongest we've seen as well. We have a couple of friends / co workers who have bought windows from them, and they're very pleased. So that's all good.
So now to the Saturday demo, measurements and pricing. Personality wise, we didn't like the salesman very much, but I'll try to stick to facts here. He did a good job of showing the features of the product, but was too wordy and missing it when we'd say "yes, we know that" and wouldn't move on. I can live with that though.
Here's the problem.
He verbally quotes the price, and then says "But you have that coupon you got in the office last week, so that knocks it down to this figure
Me: Email me the quote.
Him: Nope, we don't email quotes.
Me: OK, give me the paperwork so I can do my research and comparisons.
Him: Nope, verbal quote only, nothing in writing will be left with you because too often it ends up in the hands of our competitors.
Me: Then please give me the window spec sheets so I can compare the stats. R value, heat gain measurements, etc. etc.
Him: Nope
Me: Well, we're not going to spend this amount of money without doing our due diligence.
I then show him a picture I took of the window specs (just the basic industry standard ratings) and he confirms that those are correct for his window, but then says
Him: The discounted price from that coupon? That's today only. You have to agree to it right now, or else it reverts back to the full price I quoted, which is good for a full year.
Me: Why? We're not going to rush into a decision. You're starting to sound like a car salesman asking me "what can I do to get you to sign on the bottom line right now"?
Him: Because time is money and it's meant as an incentive for you so that I don't have to come back again to do the contract, etc.
So I have a company with an excellent reputation in all the pre-screening research I did, but they won't provide anything in writing, only give verbal figures and say that the price is a one day only offer.
And now I have texts on my phone from the salesperson saying he's authorized to give me a better offer, and apologizing for getting upset when I compared him to a car salesman.
How do you make heads or tails of this business? Shi##y rogue salesman, or is this their normal tactic?
