There is a little old-school hacking where you try to get into a server


and steal a password database with weak encryption. Sure, you may get a string of complete gibberish, but you can then run recognition algorithms to look for strings that translate into stuff like "password" or "12345" or other stuff we've been told to never use as a password for forty years. Once you find a few of those, that gives you the rosetta stone to figure out a few more.

But that only works on things that aren't very secure at all (like a local email server or something like that). Even then, hackers are counting on you using the same password elsewhere to get any value from it.

But all of that is a lot of work. So yeah, social hacking, phishing, and otherwise trying to steal, coerce, or dupe people out of their login credentials is a lot easier.
