Biggest risk to those that can sustain themselves are those that can't

Human's are a fairly predictable species and one of the first reactions will be violent gangs who will take what they want. Most of the people with the skills to subsist are likely to be taken out by those scavenging violently.

If you could disappear into the wilderness for a few months while they kill each other off and then starve because there is nothing left to steal, you would be OK.
