Tolkien was kind of a pantser, by his own admission


In the foreword to LOTR, he stated that it was a tale that grew in the telling. Of course he had all that Silmarillion class narrative to draw upon but still, he really didn't plot the whole thing out

In his book On Writing, Stephen King claims novelists rarely plot things out - the plot thickens as you write it.

I think what we're seeing here is the primary difference between writing and screenwriting.
