Right, but there in lies the rub
every Olympian pays their own way. They pay for their own coach, trainer, nutritionist, and crowd source their money and/or come from well to do families. Yes some get stipends but that is not the case across the board.
If we want to go the Olympian route for soccer, I am fine with that. Would be completely on board and you are directly "paid" with how far you get, but I doubt women or men's players would be on board. People like Alex Morgan would be making millions as she is the face of women's soccer, but many other players would not get paid that much.
My main issue is only in America do we have this perceived (in this instance) unequal pay when one sport brings in billions and the other millions. Athletes are basically "sales" people and as a group they are selling entertainment, it is only fair that the sales team selling billions gets paid more than the sales team that doesn't regardless of gender.
Again my opinion and I am certainly open to fair pay, but it has to be based on somewhat equal revenue generation for the sport as a whole not just US men vs women. FIFA doles out the money for each team and World Cup. The vast majority of each team's pay is based on the revenue generated at the World Cup every 4 years. Men's World Cup 2018 $6.1 billion, Women's World Cup 2019 ~200 million.
