Why does it have to be manned to start? And when it is manned


Who says that they have to be able to return? I'm sure we could recruit some adventurous or not much remaining life span people to go on a one way mission. Imagine the glory associated with that trip. And they would potentially get to be the first people buried in space or on Mars after they help get things setup. True progress sometimes comes with big risks and sacrifices.
