Von Braun gave the Nixon adminstation a proposal to Mars by 1985


Von Braun was largely responsible for convincing Kennedy we could be on the Moon by 69' and had even shown a demonstration of a nuclear-powered rocket engine to Kennedy that he envisioned as the engine for the Mars mission. But the was no interest from the Nixon administration in the Mars plan, so it never when any further and NASA focus became the Space Shuttle.
If Von Braun's proposal had been given funding, we are likely on Mars 20 years ago.
