My guess is they screened it and got feedback that it wasn't good so

they decided to repackage it as "controversial" and pull it with lots of news coverage. The money for the movie has already been spent so tons of free marketing with no additional current cost. Fast forward a year or two and it will somehow find a way to be limited released and get a ton of curious viewers and the company profits from what would otherwise have been a dud movie that lost them money.

At least that is one possible scenario.
