Not hard for me to make the argument at all

I'd say 1 or 2 percent of student athletes will be able to make anything beyond beans from their name/image/likeness.

Is giving to VT academics charitable? even though the money can go to professional educators and researchers? who might even be able to use their status as top educators/researchers to make money outside of what VT pays them?

Nobody is "in effect" a "professional athlete" simply because they are given the opportunity to make money. Pell Grants are about the income of the people paying the bills. If a kid is a dependent of poor parents and has the good fortune to be one of the few who ends up able to make some money from his name/image/likeness, I'm not going to lose any sleep over him getting a few thousand bucks in Pell Grants per year.
