Conference championship games should be the de facto playoff first round

I agree that 4 is enough ... no need to expand the playoff—just amend the rules to allow only conference champions to be eligible. With that in mind, the conferences should be allowed to eliminate divisions if they so choose and allow their top two teams to meet for the championship. It wouldn’t necessarily have to be the top two teams by conference record (although I think it SHOULD be those two). The conference could choose its own method, like the two highest-ranked teams overall.

Once CCG weekend is over, only the four highest rated (by whatever measure) conference champions move on to the playoff. Yes this means Notre Dame and any other independent who wants a shot at the playoff would have to join a conference. This would also allow a highly-ranked G5 team a chance to get in over a 9-4 ish P5 champ.

Good luck getting the SEC to vote for this though. Plus I’m sure ND would pressure the ACC to go against it as well.
