Here is what we did.

1. Have the kid write a letter to admissions saying that he is disappointed that he didn't get accepted ED but he wants them to know VT is still his first choice and he will accept if offered admission. Then give a couple of reasons why they should choose him (not I've always wanted to go to VT - better reasons.)

2. Continue the dialogue. My son called admissions once and wrote another letter in about January that included more information that they should consider. He included a copy of a project that he was very proud of and related it to work he could do at VT. He made a case of why he should be accepted.

He didn't find out he got in until regular decision on about late March, but he got in. Now this is 8 years ago, so the information could be dated, but the whole idea is to find out who in admissions is responsible for reading his application, and giving them reasons why they should pick him. Get him noticed. And if you can't get him noticed at VT, there are other great schools.
