I don't know the details of the negotiation, but here is my speculation


as to why it was included in the deal. If you remember when the 8 schools decided to leave the 16-member WAC to form the MWC in the late 90s, the MWC had to go 1 or 2 seasons where the conference didn't receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament because it didn't meet all the bylaw requirements. As a side note, I don't think the revisions were done to let the Big East 2.0 keep/earn an automatic bid, but I guess it is possible. I think it was done to make the requirements more conference friendly given what happened to the Great West Conference.

At the time the AAC schools were "kicked out" of the Big East, I don't think the schools met all the bylaw requirement to secure an automatic bid or at least the AAC would have to go through a similar waiting period as the MWC or the Great West Conference (which never secured an automatic bid before eventually folding). So they negotiated the rights to keep the Big East 1.0's automatic bid knowing full well that the Big East 2.0 would be able to secure a new one without having to miss a year. Basically the AAC used the deal as a loophole to circumvent the requirements.
