I should say that it hasn't all been bad.

My daughter has been a real trooper throughout this. She loves school and had an amazing teacher this year, so she was a little bummed that it got cancelled. But she's had a really positive outlook the entire time. She's also been incredibly forgiving when I've just lost patience and snapped at her. Usually she just needs help with schoolwork or just wants some attention, and I feel terrible when I have to shew her out of my home office so I can focus. We've had some really good bonding time, and part of me is really going to miss having her around all the time. If I was simply a stay-at-home dad and wasn't trying to work, I'd be loving this period of her being home. So sending her off to camp next week will be at least somewhat bittersweet, even though it will provide me some much-needed space to decompress.

The whole thing has just been a real bummer for a lot of people. Obviously thousands of families are mourning the loss of a loved one right now, while many others are caring for those still being affected by the virus. I feel blessed that the only real impact we've felt has just been the stay-at-home stuff. I think with the recent nationwide events taking some of the media focus away from the virus, it's seemed like things are starting to feel more "normal", but today we went to my daughter's school to pick up her notebooks and assignments and say goodbye to her teacher, and it was kind of a sad reminder of how the virus continues to impact us all. I felt pretty bummed seeing her teacher pack up everything today, because she had a great impact on my daughter and their time together was cut short.

There are millions of kids that missed out on a quarter of a school year, and while many of them probably still managed to learn some things remotely, others are at risk of getting left behind because of a lack of technology and/or parental involvement. If for no other reason than that, I hope schools will be able to operate on as close to a "normal" schedule in the fall as possible.
