I live in Austin and it's OK, San Antonio would be a hard no
For a city of 2.5 million people there is remarkably little to do in San Antonio, which is probably why housing is so cheap (this is a plus). The Alamo + Riverwalk is basically the times square of Texas, and outside of that there are no other attractions in the city. There's not really a nightlife district or walkable downtown with an abundance of restaurants. The private sector is also pretty uninspiring, USAA, HEB, and Whataburger are the major companies so if you don't like working in insurance/defense or food distribution it's not the best.
The problem with central Texas is how incredibly isolated it is, so you have to have things to do within driving distance. San Antonio is relatively close to the beach, but this is Texas so that's not saying much unless you like brown delta water. Hill country is great though and it's easy accessible from both SA and Austin. I do know people who love SA, but they're generally more interesting in their home-centric lifestyle and not on going out and about.
