I've wanted to do the same. I almost pulled the trigger a few years ago...

...when I was starting to build a system around the Iris (Lowe's brand) hub. Then Lowe's completely pulled the plug on the platform and "bricked" the hub. To their credit, they provided store credit to reimburse people who had recently purchased hardware. But, I've been skittish to start over again with a different platform - it seems like things are always changing in the "smart device" world and I don't want to get burned again.
