Let's get the obvious one out of the way: The Beatles.


Pretty big difference between the mop-top pop stars of the early years to the hallucinagenic hippy stuff from their latter years.

My other knee-jerk response was Queen. But they were more a band who could come up with a hit in almost any style. It wasn't that their style evolved, they could do just about anything and do it well.
