Mostly it’s weight. Some aircraft land faster that others (MD-11 is


transport category aircraft) by design. Also, the use of flaps affect landing speed - the more flap, the slower you can go, but you carry more power (uses a little more gas and louder). Most of the time planes land into the wind, which can reduce the ground speed, and likewise, tailwinds increase the ground speed. While not an issue in CLT, higher altitude airports will see high ground speeds due to higher True Airspeed - we fly Indicated Airspeed (IAS). I have taken an MD11 into Toluca, MX (8,000 above sea level) and at 160kts IAS we were seeing 196kts GS. Also, there is kind of an optical illusion - smaller planes sometimes seem faster than larger planes because it takes less time to fly their own length 😉
