Sounds like he needs to implement the “no strikeout” rule.


You are not allowed to strike out. If you do, you lose PT, do laps, or have to wear a UVA pin on your uniform next game.

It makes you think about all the different ways you can get on base. Work a walk. Lean into an inside pitch (carefully). Drag a bunt. If all else fails, slow your swing down by 80% and just reach out and tap it somewhere.

We want the ball in play (walks are ok too). That’s because fielding in college softball just isn’t good enough to make every play.

Strikeouts are just killers. Doesn’t matter whether there are runners on base or not. I have a sense our girls are swinging for the fences a lot. That’s a no-no when you’re struggling because you start forcing things and chasing bad pitches. It becomes a virtuous circle of frustration and failure.

Back to basics. Put the ball in play or draw a walk. Good things will follow.
