I worked at Grand during college. There are definitely some cheaper brands,
some of which were also sold at Big Lots. But there are also several high end brands. Problem is, as Tafkam says below, nobody buys the high end stuff. I know I wouldn't. The difference in the mid range stuff and high end isn't really that much. My parents bought a very expensive dining set almost 20 years ago when I worked there. Very nice, all wood, hand crafted. I have been though 2 dining sets in that same time and paid less than half what they paid for each. So really we come out about even.
As far as sofa's and such, I don't plan on keeping it 10 or 15 years anyway....because by then I'll probably look at it and say, "dang that was ugly, what was I thinking....styles have really changed".
I'm sure there's some nostalgia in keeping a recliner for 30 years.....but I look at home design and fashion from then and laugh. One day I'll probably laugh at how we have decorated our house now as well.
We recently gave away our daughter's dresser and changing table from 13 years ago. It had been sitting in the basement. Still looked great. And we actually got it as a hand-me-down from friends. I would have sworn it was solid wood, but as I was taking the drawers out I noticed it was just pressed wood with a layer of nicer wood on top. I didn't know....and really, I didn't care.
