This entire discussion
brings into focus the viability of college sports as we have known it.
With an arms race going on in football, which only a handful can compete in, to basketball evolving into either a NBA or European farm teams (not even including the ramifications of the portal), I can see a sea change coming as all this is very destabilizing.
I have thought for several years now that the only viable solution is to gravitate towards the Ivy League model, where for the most part, they have students that also play sports.
I know for many this path seems distasteful (including myself here), but one has to wonder how the landscape will look 10 or 15 years from now.
The other solution would be to have both the NFL and the NBA provide the funding for facilities and coaches, since they are the beneficiaries of the product that we, as fans, are ponying up our hard earned money for and that they eventually benefit from.
Maybe we need a sports evolution board.
