I listened to Seth Greenburg give a warm reason why Roy Williams has decided to hang up the spikes. Basically, to break it down his deduction was that you cannot coach the players today because of the one and done and the transfer portal and the state of college basketball today and that Roy Williams did not come into college coaching for the money. I bought it all at the time and I almost cried and then I woke up this morning and analyzed the reasoning and I cried no.
If Roy is in it for the purity for the game then I am sure Wofford would take him at a huge pay cut at any time? Do you think Seth Greenburg or any of these other coaches or the hallowed Duke coach would accept less to go coach at Army? Seth came to VT for his family and his future for the chance to coach in the ACC and the money. Am I supposed to feel sorry for Roy Williams because it is harder to coach up players or for him to look better or for the UNC BLUE to look better?
When I look at the current situation at VT basketball I do not blame Jalen Cone or Joe Bamisile for leaving? Do I think It will hurt them or help them? That remains to be seen. I do understand what Seth Greenburg was trying to convey in a broader sense as far as toughing it out and hanging in there but there is also a history of bigger programs stockpiling talent and players not getting a chance to develop. This is not a shot at Roy Williams nor the Carolina program but just a view from the outside. Players have a right as do workers to look around and be free to choose what they want to do.
