I overseed in fall and spring. I wish I didn't need to...

...because as most people will tell you, often spring seeding does not establish roots deep enough to survive extreme summer temperatures. Unfortunately, our back yard gets a lot of shade and thins quickly, so if I don't overseed every ~6 months, things look pretty sparse by the following fall. We've had some trees removed in the past 18 months which has helped, so I'm hoping I can cut back to only overseeing in the fall soon.

If you're just patching bare spots, you should be able to keep those watered enough to survive the summer.
