I battled it for several years as a runner. Thankfully it hasn’t

Been an issue for 4-5 years. As you get older (and in many cases a bit heavier) your feet flatten out and arch support issues lead to plantars. Custom arch supports are your friends. But more important is make sure your shoes still fit and move towards shoes with larger toe boxes. The Brooks Glycerin running shoe is a good example.

For example: I was a 9-91/2 shoe size in my teens and early 20s. I am an 11 now. About a 1/2 size Of the increase is due to room for custom made arch supports but the rest is from the foot getting flatter over time.

Other tricks I have learned:
-when it starts to flair up go after it hard. Ice, massage, stretching, ibuprofen. Several cycles a day. A frozen water bottle is a great ally.
-keep a baseball and a golf ball in your office. Day long massage tool right there.
- make sure your sheets are not tucked in too tight. Seriously. If your feet are pointed straight out all night because your feet can’t relax your feet it reduces flexibility over time. This has been an issue and a solution for several guys I run with. And even my mother in law who isn’t very active.
- use KT tape or a plantars bandage solution for support when it is flairing up. x brace (available on Amazon) is my favorite. I can’t wear the boots at night. They drive me crazy.
- to prevent plantars focus on calf flexibility and strength and hamstring flexibility. Many running injuries through the legs are often tied to hamstring inflexibility and lack of lateral strength in the core and hips. Simple exercises like Calf raises (single and double legs) even without weights and hip flexor exercises combined with hamstring stretching can really help prevent plantars.
- I prefer hard or firm custom arch supports over foam or gel inserts. These used to be expensive but the prices have come down a lot. I have about 4 sets of customs now. Use them in dress shoes (daily shoe) and running shoes. They last forever now. Two sets are over 10 years old. So you get your money out of them.

My biggest focus would be making sure you are wearing the proper sizes shoes with good toe flexibility and arch support. Flip flops over extended periods can cause my PF to flair. So i try to wear my running shoes if I feel it coming on. That often helps.

Recently I know of several folks using the massage guns as well. They work great for a lot of other maladies as well. Good luck. Stay on top of it and you can get it to disappear.
