Pondering a change in career and move to Charlotte - ideas?


I've practiced litigation for 29 years and do not particularly enjoy it anymore (a sentiment shared by many lawyers of my vintage). Our move to Pittsburgh has not worked out because, oddly enough, it is harder for my wife to get a teaching job in western PA than it is for me to get a lawyer job.

The wife has an interest in moving to the Charlotte area and has been offered a job there for the 2021-22 school year. I do not have a North Carolina law license; I could get one through reciprocity but there is a nonsensical 6 month wait period from the time the application is filed to the time it can be issued. And I'm not that anxious to continue in private practice anyway.

So the question is, what kind of job market is there for an early 50s, not-yet-but-soon-might-be former lawyer with an aerospace engineering degree? What should I consider trying to do with myself that has some reasonable earning potential and doesn't require a bunch of new licenses or certifications immediately?
