Can’t speak specifically to the career questions


But I lived in Charlotte for almost 15 years. Loved it but it got a bit big for us. My recommendation is live close to your work. This might require renting for a bit to figure out where you want to live. Traffic can suck if you have to drive long distances at rush hour.

It’s a much more diverse employment market than in the 1990s when it was mostly banking and law. Lots of options. Maybe look at law related to aerospace or transportation? Lots of logistics companies that do a lot of contract work in the area.
