I disagree, at least under the premise


that if federally funded higher education happened, it would be in the form of grants to the states to allocate how they see fit.

If you look around the world of local public service jobs (teachers, police, first responders, sheriffs, etc), those are hardly areas with exploding runaway costs. If anything they tend to be grossly underfunded for what we ask of them.

If you just hand free money to prospective college students to spend as they see fit, then I would agree with you. But I doubt that is how it would unfold if this gets legitimate traction.
