In theory, it shouldn't. But at a macro level

The person who borrows $60,000 to get an art history degree is going to really struggle to pay that back compared to the person who borrows $60,000 to get a chemical engineering degree.

$60K in debt at age 22 with an art history degree is a soul-crushing, hopelessness-inducing, life-altering amount of debt. Sure, if they pay it back, what does it matter. But how in the world are they going to pay it back without enduring economic hardship for 10-15 years?
