WSJ did a longform article on Student Loans.

Lots of stuff covered. One thing I noted was how the student loan program has continually been expanded because the payments on it show up as revenue and can be used to offset deficits. It's ostensibly expanded to increase education opportunities but members of both parties were really seeking the extra "profit" from doing it. The problem is that the repayment rates are much lower and defaults much higher than the projections so the rosey picture the projections paint is not really true.

Also one reason why the Fed Govt is reluctant to reduce interest rates on graduate student loans because they'd then have to reduce their "profit" projections from the program. Lots to digest in that article.
