I know 10+ people who have gone to work there

Correct on compensation though depending on what you are doing, it can be pretty good (clearances help). Experience in AWS is highly sought after in industry, and what better place to learn. That said, Amazon is not like Google or Pixar. More like long hours and not so amazing company culture.
