Let's forget arbitrary polls, selections and seedings for a second, and
let's talk on-the-field reality.
Notre Dame hasn't been good enough to win a national championship for about 30 years. Even if we don't take into account that Notre Dame is perpetually overrated, the fact that they haven't been good enough to win it ALL is the material point.
Now, let's say that somehow soon, ND actually gets SEC-good and is good enough to win it all. In fact, let's go as far to say that ND is head and shoulders above the the field. If this is the case, a home game in December against the 12-seed (maybe even a G5 team) isn't gonna stop them from winning a national title.
When it comes to polls, selections and seedings, some team has to fill those slots. But just because a certain school is ranked CLOSE to #1 doesn't mean that in reality, they are CLOSE to being the number one team in the land. I think Notre Dame gets this, and the Paul Finebaums and Heather Dinichs of the world, don't.
The bottom line is, ND knows they have to get better to win a title. And if they get good enough to win a title, they won't be afraid to do it from the 5-seed line in the bracket.
