Would Adding West Virginia to the ACC significantly increase team payouts?
Long time viewer of this board and Hokie Alumni. Have not posted in years but like to read. Ok, i'm presuming that Playoff expansion happens and Divisions are no longer required. If Notre Dame makes it clear after the playoff expansion that they are still not interested in joining full time, and presuming other Big Fish such as Texas are off the table, does the ACC add West Virginia by itself to increase their payouts to get closer to those of the SEC and Big 10 or would this not be possible? People typically say Football is 80% of the TV Deals value. I could see adding strong rivalries vs VT and Pitt being nice ratings winners. West Virginia vs. Clemson, Florida State, Notre Dame, and Miami would be huge games and must see TV. Further, most of the non traditional rivals like UNC, UVA, NC State, and Louisville would be Bowl Caliber type games. Thats a strong inventory for adding West Virginia. I would have to think this would be appealing to ESPN. They would'nt even need to play many of the teams they don't have much in common with if (Duke, Wake, etc) if Divisions are eliminated. So, the questions are
1) Would this force ESPN to increase payouts, and if so, 2) Would the ACC be unified in wanting to add West Virginia for this reason. I know certain schools would be against it but there are also some and lots of football fans that would be all for this. Thanks
