TV is changing from prioritizing cable footprint to streaming events
And yes, rivalry games are better events.
10 years ago conference expansion was justified on cable footprint. SEC goes to Texas, B1G and ACC to New York. Add cable boxes that pay network subscription fees, whether or no the networks are watched.
Now, streaming is driving TV distribution. Netflix Hulu Disney+ need their events to keep people subscribing:
Netflix: Joe Exotic and the Crown
Disney+: Hamilton and Wandavision
Hulu: The Office
Sports equivalent of these series is BIG GAMES. SEC has tons of football event games, B1G and BXII a few, PAC12 and ACC not as many. WVU will add event games, with full stands, exciting play, rivalries vs VT, PITT, LVille, even UVA makes the ACCN more attractive for streaming.
And if you go to16 Cincinnati is so obvious. Football program with ACC level infrastructure. Basketball program that can compete in the ACC. Good academics.
ACC North: BC, Syr, Cinncy, LVille
ACC MId Atlantic: Pitt WVU UVA VT
ACC Pamlico: UNC NCSU Duke Wake
ACC South: Clemson, GT, FSU Miami.
