It is possible that ESPN or SEC views this as being a "football only
decision" for now. If schools or a conference is going to attempt starting a semi-pro/elite league, then might as well "experiment" with 1 sport than a whole bunch of sports at 1 time. If you are going to pick a sport to serve as the guinea pig, then might as well pick the elephant in the room since it offers the most scholarships and it has the most implications on a school's ability to comply with Title IX requirements. Once people see how the experiment goes and whether people will embrace it or not, then ESPN can start to explore doing something similar for other popular collegiate sports and gradually enter them into the fold.
