The beauty of a 10 game conference schedule is the ACC could
still maintain the protected cross-division and play the remaining 6 teams in the other division home and away in a 4 year cycle.
6 division games
1 protected cross-division game
3 rotating cross-division games (the remaining 6 teams would be divided into 2 groups of 3 that rotate every 2 years for scheduling purposes)
The groups could even be structured so that if a team plays 2 teams from the same state (i.e. FL, NC, VA) or 2 teams from the same region (i.e. Northeast), then 1 team would be placed in each group. For example, VT's 2 groups could look like the following.
Protected: BC
Group 1: Syracuse, Clemson, NC State
Group 2: L'ville, FSU, Wake
While Clemson's 2 groups could look like the following.
Protected: GT
Group 1: VT, Pitt, UNC
Group 2: UVA, Miami, Duke
Given that the 14 schools already have a "natural pairing" by state or region, this may even be a great time to realign the divisions so the protected cross-division game is based on these pairings.
BC-Syracuse
Pitt-L'ville
UVA-VT
Duke-Wake
UNC- NC State
Clemson-GT
FSU-Miami
