Right now Iowa and Nebraska are paired up for rivalry purposes

If the Big Ten found a new dance partner for Iowa (i.e. Iowa State or even Missouri), then the Big Ten would be forced to find Nebraska a new dance partner too. If that is the case, then I believe the Big Ten would have only 2 options; Kansas or Colorado.

Also, it would allow the Big Ten to move Purdue from the West to East so it is in the same division as Indiana. As a result of that move, the Big Ten could eliminate its 1 protected cross-division game (i.e. Indiana-Purdue) and all the scheduling quirks that come with it.

Personally, I am not sure that is a good enough reason for the Big Ten to pull the trigger on Kansas. However, if the Big Ten does end up adding Kansas, then those could be some reasons to answer the "Why?" question given that Kansas is a basketball school and historically bad in football.
