That's one of those polls that make no sense...

why would you poll average Americans that question? Maybe poll a lot of doctors would make more sense or even better epidemiologists (but still not the best way to get to a factual conclusion)

'course the poll may really be something different, eg, a poll about how Americans feel, not that they have any knowledge of how disease spreads. That is, you might be able to use this to forecast economic growth in the coming months, not anything about how will covid spread.
