The public issue was that the Sheriff tried to hide his involvement, to the point that the INS agent filed an affidavit accusing him of hindering/lying. I suspect the special nature of the relationship led to the cover up. From that perspective, our county is now better off for it being in the open, as that lessens the risk that the good sheriff might be blackmailed.
