What's this?

My (then) 4YO walked off at the beach last year.


Huge family beach trip. Some at the umbrellas, some at the waters edge. He, his brother, and his cousins went down to the water next to my folks with buckets to fill up a castle moat with water. Brother and cousin ran back up leaving him behind.

My wife looked up and couldn't see the 4YO. I said, "he's with my folks, don't worry." She insisted. I stood up and he was nowhere.

Turns out we had told him to look for our particularly colorful umbrella. When he looked up the beach, he went to an umbrella 50' down he shore. When that wasn't us, he continued to walk up the beach looking for us.

I watched my wife, the strongest woman I know, scream bloody murder and melt into the sand. I dove in the ocean looking for him. Sister's BF ran up the beach, and BIL ran the opposite way.

We called the police and they came racing on 4-wheelers. After about 20 mins, my sister's BF found him over a mile up the beach.

That was one of the worst 20 mins of our lives. I can't imagine this kind of thing.
