I think the difference is that the defense adjusted and improved.

The defense got better as the game progressed and gave the offense a chance to win. Meanwhile, the offense did not. The third first and goal was just as unproductive as the first. I'm not an X's and O's guy, but it's not obvious that we made adjustments to the offense to set our players up for success. If the third time inside the 10 had won the game, to me that would have been redemption. Unfortunately we could not deliver when the opportunity was presented. Just my $.02.
