Personally, I'd rather pay for something once and own it

than get stuck with a subscription in perpetuity. Buying a copy of Office outright is about the same price as 2-3 years worth of a subscription.

And as the information age has matured, I've gotten extremely leery of "free" software. I used to think Microsoft was pure, concentrated evil. But here lately I've come to respect their old-fashioned business model of making stuff and selling it (vs. giving it away for free then monetizing all the data they collect on you).
